United Edge Closer To Defender Deal

Manchester United are closing in on a £9.2m deal for young French defender Raphael Varane as they continue their recruitment drive.

The 18-year-old is the latest new face to be targeted by Sir Alex Ferguson as he looks to freshen up his squad.
Varane, who plays for Lens, is regarded as one of the hottest prospects in France as reflected by the centre-back's prize tag.

United are thought to have already knocked some cash off Lens' valuation but his transfer would represent another hefty outlay by Ferguson this summer.
The biggest stumbling block to the deal is his desire to play regular first-team football which United couldn't guarantee to start with.

Speaking last week, Varane said he would "think carefully" about moving to United.
He added:
"What interests me is the playing time. I have to think twice and go to a club that will allow me to progress. The most reasonable choice would be to stay in Ligue 1."
